“Noos” (Fun) Club

“Noos” means “fun”. The Noos Club is sort of a Head Start/enhancement program for our scholarship girls.

Friends of Guéoul took an abandoned upstairs room in the school, added electricity, got it all spiffed up, and voila–we’re ready for “noos”.

Baye Thierno Ndiaye has been an elementary teacher for…20 years. He is married to Dietou, one of Judy’s kids when she was in Senegal in the Peace Corps in the early 1990’s. He got wind of what we were doing with Friends of Guéoul, one thing lead to another, and now he’s the club director.

When Diane, Mary Ellen and her kids were in Senegal in January 2010, we had some grand art projects.
In February, Baye Thierno and I conducted the 3-times-a-week gathering. He started by reading from a book that is similar to Aesop’s Fables. First he reads in French, then in Wolof.

Some activities of the Noos Club:

  • Reading stories in French
  • Watching movies in French
  • Getting help with homework
  • Making art projects
